Water Conservation Facts and How They Can Help You Save Energy
One of the easiest ways to save money on energy costs is to focus on water! The fact is, we use way too much of it and waste even more! It is interesting to note that one person only needs about 4 gallons of water per day...this includes drinking, bathing and cooking! Try this water fact on for size - the typical household uses about 300 gallons per day! That is enough for 75 people! Read on for more water conservation facts and ways to save energy in your home.

Are your energy bills too big? Most people get their energy bills in the mail, complain...
Check Your Faucets
Fact: Your faucets are likely leaking!
If you haven’t checked the faucets both inside and outside of your home, you probably should! They are probably leaking water and each drop is costing you money!
You will also want to look at the type of faucet you have. There are two types – double faucets and single faucets. The double faucets are more efficient because you don’t waste water waiting for the correct temperature.
Hot Water Heater
Fact: Your hot water heater is probably too hot!
A majority of households keep their hot water heaters at too high of a temperature. For the most effective use of hot water, your heater should be no higher than 140 degrees F. In most cases, you wouldn’t use water any hotter than that, and if you need to, simply boil it on the stove. Turning it down just a few degrees can save a lot on your energy bills!
Take a Shower
Fact: Taking a bath uses double the water that a normal shower does
At bare minimum, taking a bath uses 20 gallons of water! A shower uses less than half of that amount, especially if you take a short shower! Additionally, with a very small investment, you can even purchase shower heads that conserve water.
Keeping your shower short and with a lower temperature can help you save up to 20% off your annual water costs!
Don’t Flush Your Money Away
Fact: New toilet designs conserve water...and save you money!
Most people think nothing of flushing your toilet several times a day when you don’t need to. For instance, how many times have you used a tissue to blow your nose and just tossed it in the toilet and flushed it away? Each time you do that, you spend money! Throwing it in a trash can is free!
New toilet designs are also on the market. They use less water than traditional bowls and are not extremely expensive. You can also try putting a brick or rock directly in the tank. This will use less water from the start.
Think Before Washing Your Clothes
Fact: Doing full loads of laundry can save up to 1,000 gallons per month of water.
Running a washing machine, though probably necessary, is a huge waste of water and a big chunk of change from your wallet. If you have a traditional washing machine, it is important for you to always do full loads of laundry. You will minimize both your water and energy costs.
If you are willing to make an investment, consider getting an energy efficient washer. These use less than half the water a traditional washer will use and the washer will pay for itself in energy savings! You should also not use the hot water setting on your washer unless absolutely necessary. Most loads of laundry can be washed in cold water, and there are even laundry detergents on the market specifically for cold water washes.
