Are your energy bills too big? Most people get their energy bills in the mail, complain...
How Much Water Can You Save?
Think about taking a bath. Each bath you take, on average, will use 30 to 50 gallons of water. A shower, on the other hand, uses 10-20 gallons. You can cut that down even further by using an efficiency shower head. If your shower fills up a 1-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, it is a good indication that you should get a more efficient model. These shower heads are inexpensive, easy to install and will save up to 750 gallons of water per month!
Another way to save water while showering is to cut down the shower time. Cutting down your shower by 2 minutes can save up to 150 gallons of water per month.
Other Tips to Save Water in the Shower
There are other things you can do to save water and even save money for water and energy costs. One of the ways to save is to brush your teeth and wash your face in the shower. You are in there anyway, so why not save time and water by doing those things in the shower.
You can recycle water from the shower very easily as well. Most people will not go into the shower as soon as they turn it on. Usually it needs to warm up a bit, as no one likes stepping into a cold stream of water! While you are waiting for the water to heat up, throw a bucket in there to collect the water that is falling. Use that water for another purpose, like watering your plants or flushing the toilet. It is much better than simply letting it fall into the drain.
A third tip to save water and energy in the shower is to install a shower timer to remind yourself not to stay in there too long! You can get timers with a simple alarm or timers that will actually turn the water off!
Saving Energy and Cash with Your Shower
The major monetary cost with the shower doesn’t necessarily come from the price of the water, it comes from the price of the energy that is used to heat the water. Making sure the water temperature is between 120 and 140 degrees F will give you the most effective shower.
Heating a gallon of water to 120 to 140 degrees F costs about 1 cent. If you use between 10 – 20 gallons per shower, that is about 10- 20 cents per day. Per year, that averages $36 - $73 to shower. Comparing that to a bath, you are spending about $109 - $255, meaning you can save a nice amount just by showering! Adding one of those efficient shower heads can save you up to $75 per month! Talk about some significant savings!
As you can see, making some small changes in your bathroom and especially your shower can have a significant impact on both the world’s environment and your own wallet!
