Roads and Paths
Roads and paths are great places to look for treasures, especially old roads that may have been used 100’s of years ago, but are no longer used now. A quick trip to your local library can help you find these roads in your area. Even paved roads that are used now can yield good results. These roads are probably old roads or paths that have been paved over.
Your best bet is to look several feet off the road, not only for your own personal safety, but over time, items will be shifted and moved from their original positions. It is not uncommon to find bags of gold coins, antique tin items like cups and whistles or even old tools.
Farms
Farms can be amazing places to take your metal detector. The best farms are those that have been passed down, generation after generation. You should always make sure you are getting permission from the current owners before searching on someone’s farm. Offer to give the owner a cut of anything you find and you will usually have good luck getting that permission!
On a farm, the best places to look for treasures are near old buildings or sites where old buildings stood. If the farm is no longer a working farm, you may need to look at old land records or again take a trip to your local library to find these areas. It could very well be worth your time!
Waterways
Rivers and streams are also areas where you can find excellent treasures with your metal detector. Again, rivers that have been used for transportation or those on old trade routes are superb for exploring with your metal detector.
You don’t necessarily need to get into the water, searching the banks of a river or stream can give you great results too. Again, you may want to take a trip to your local library or land office. Knowing where old bridges or trails near the water can help you narrow down places to search.
Beaches
Beaches are popular places to metal detect, especially busy beaches. They can be great areas to find modern treasures such as coins and other valuable metals. Since there are generally people going to beaches daily, there is a daily potential of finding new and exciting objects.
If you live near protected beaches, you may need permission from your city or state in order to take your metal detector onto the beach. Be aware of all laws before venturing out!
No matter where you decide to take your metal detector, always remember to be safe and have permission to be on the land you are searching. Public land usually isn’t restricted, but if you venture onto private land, you could run into problems.
