Metal Detecting in the Park: Tips for a Successful Trip
Using your metal detector in local parks is a great way to find grand treasures. Don’t Wait for Summer!
Just because it is cold out, doesn’t mean you should store your metal detector for the winter. If you are only using your metal detector in the summer months, there are 6-9 months of treasure hunting you are missing out on! Since most people only go out in the summer months, this opens the door to those brave souls who will brave the winter cold with their trusty metal detector.
If you do decide to go out in the winter, late fall or early spring, make sure you are dressing for the weather and take extra tools in case you need to dig though the ice and snow. Just because it is winter time, doesn’t mean activity is taking a break at the park. Many people still go to park in the winter to walk, sled, ice skate or even cross country ski.
Know Your History
Many local parks are actually historical sites. These sites are very likely filled with historical relics including valuable coins, war memorabilia, hidden caches and even valuable tools. It is possible that you, using your metal detector, can even find items that have been hidden for 100’s of years. You may even find a site that will have archaeological significance.
Before searching at local parks that may have historical implication, make sure it is legal to do so and ensure that you have permission from the city or state in which the park is located. You may be able to find out which parks have historical significance by taking a visit to your local library or city land office.
Learn How to Use Your Metal Detector
The park is a great place to learn how to actually use your metal detector. Parks are large enough spaces where you can spread out and find more private areas where you can focus on learning the ropes with your metal detector without outside influences. Parks also are filled with garbage, which can be a great thing to find when learning to use your medal detector.
Different types of metal will cause your metal detector to make different sounds. By finding trash, you will be able to know the sound trash makes, meaning you can likely skip those tones in the future.
Different Areas of a Park
In addition to searching the more populated areas of a park, you should also be searching areas that are wooded, areas that are only accessible by walking paths and areas that are near waterways. Wooded areas and banks of rivers and lakes are excellent places to search for metals and possibly rare treasures!
You may also find great treasures near footbridges and even areas of the park where trash is collected. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
