Prepare for Sleep

If you have insomnia, it may be due to many physical reasons, but you should also check on environmental reasons. Look at your bed, pillows, light or sounds in the room or any type of distractions. If there is a noise outside that is constant, like a train you have no control over, try a sleep machine with sounds to attempt to block those sounds, or use ear plugs to sleep. You should be dressed comfortably in something that allows you to move freely. If it is hot, have a fan, if it is cold, have extra covers. You should be as comfortable as possible when sleeping. That might stop your problem right there!

Removing Tension

Once you are perfectly comfortable in your bed, close your eyes and breathe deeply for a few minutes. Let your body relax. You may want to visually go over your body in your mind and imagine all the tension leaving your toes, then your feet, ankles, calves, etc. Keep going until in your mind, you have visualized all the tension leaving your body.

You may also want to say to yourself things like “I am at ease.” Or “I am allowing all the tension to leave my body”. This isn’t something you should say out loud, just in your head as you relax. You should feel yourself becoming loose and calm.

Slow Your Mind

Once your body is relaxed, you should relax your mind. This is very easy to do. The first method is this: Once again, say to yourself “I am at ease” or “I fall asleep easily”. Begin to say it at a normal rate. As you say it a few times, slow down the words and slow down the rate you are saying it to yourself. Your thoughts should be getting slower and slower as you say this chosen phrase over in your head. You will feel yourself drifting off and you shouldn’t fight it. Just sleep.

The second method of slowing your mind is to completely clear your head. Your head should be a blank slate. In fact, you want to picture a blank slate. Perhaps it is a dry erase board or a simple lap chalk board. Whatever it is, it should be blank, with nothing written on it. Just by focusing on that blank slate, you will forget the things that were bogging down your mind in the first place. Since you are already relaxed, sleep should come easily!

If you find yourself thinking negatively or think “this won’t work”, re-affirm to yourself that it will help! If you have doubt, this is just one more thing you will have to remove from your mind in order to fall asleep. Forget those negative thoughts. Think positive, remain calm and sleep soundly. You will no longer need the harmful medications and you will no longer have any sleepless nights.
