How to Improve Your Memory

In general, your brain has two main types of memory: short term memory and long term memory. Most people think of their overall memory as a combination of the two types. Short term memory is that type of memory where you only need to remember an item of information for a short time. It is briefly stored in your brain and goes away just as quickly.

Long term memory is stored in your brain for an extended period of time, and it is meant to be recalled for as long as you need that information. Many of us, however, find that at times we may have problems recalling short term memories and even more troubling, may have problems recalling long term memories. The good news is this: there are many things you can do to improve your memory! It doesn’t have to be a permanent situation. We can show you how to improve your memory!

1. Change Your Environment

One very easy thing you can do when you need to remember something is to change your environment. No, we aren’t suggesting a total home make-over, but it will help to change something. Even adding a plant or getting a new lamp can trigger in your mind that something is different.

By putting something in your environment to make it different, you are creating a visualization of the room as it is now, for instance. Your brain will know this is not how it was. In turn, it will say “Ahhh. We needed to remember something”. It is essentially just a simple trigger to shock your mind into recalling what you need to remember.

2. Visualization and Association

The visualization and association method works to turn words into images so you can remember and recall them easily. An example of this is to imagine you have a doctor’s appointment at 3:00 in the afternoon. Think of a visual image of three items. Make it fun, like “The Three Little Pigs” or “Three Blind Mice”. Visualize the blind mice in the doctor’s office. When you think of the doctor’s office, you will now see the three mice and remember the appointment is at 3:00. The more unique the visualization is, the easier it will be to recall!

3. Exercise and Memory

We all know that exercise is important in our lives, but it is also an excellent way to improve your overall memory. Not only does exercise develop the body inside and out, it enables the brain to work more smoothly.

In order for the brain to function properly, it needs a strong and constant stream of oxygen. Studies show the more you exercise, the easier this oxygen gets to your brain which increases and improves your memory.

4. Verbalizing

One of the simplest things you can do to improve your memory is to verbalize what you need to remember! For instance, if you have a short mental list of groceries you need to pick up after work, actually saying the list out loud will keep it in your memory longer, which will enable you to recall the list with ease.

Verbalizing is also a great way to remember things like addresses, phone numbers and even birthdays. Using verbalization and visualization together can supercharge your memory in a way you may not be able to believe!

Recalling these memories will also come easier to you if you are calm and relaxed, so it is important for you to not get frustrated or stressed.
