1. Valerian

Though the herb known as valerian is usually used for insomnia, it is also an effective herbal remedy for those with mild anxiety and panic. It is generally only used in the evening before bed because it can make you sleepy.

It should not be taken with any other medications. You should never take it with alcohol or if you have any type of liver problems.

2. Passionflower

Passionflower is a folk medicine that goes back 100’s of years in the treatment of anxiety and panic disorder. It is also commonly taken for insomnia. Studies of passionflower for anxiety have been shown to be just as effective as benzodiazepine drugs which are prescription drugs for panic attacks.

Side effects of passionflower are nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat and drowsiness. Passionflower should not be taken by any pregnant woman or by anyone who is taking prescription drugs.

3. Kava Kava

Kava Kava, or simply kava, is an herbal supplement that is used by many to treat anxiety and panic. Kava is most notably used as a short term treatment of anxiety and is known as safe and effective during that time. Long term use has been shown to cause liver damage.

Side effects of kava can differ based on how you take it. If you take it in a powder or drink form, you may experience lip and mouth numbing, sleepiness, vivid dreams and mild euphoria. Long term use, in addition to liver damage, can also cause scaly skin and rash.

4. Chamomile

You have probably heard about the calming effects of chamomile tea and these calming effects can be seen when it is used as an herbal remedy for anxiety. It is also available in pill form, liquid extract and creams.

In addition to being an important herbal treatment, chamomile is used as treatment for insomnia, upset stomach, infections, wound healing and colic.

Side effects of chamomile include drowsiness, increase bleeding if cut, allergic reactions, nausea and vomiting.

5. Rhodiola Rosea

A less commonly known herb, rhodiola rosea is a root that is taken generally in pill form. It is usually taken to relieve stress, fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Side effects of rhodiola rosea are rare, but if they do occur they include headache, nausea, dizziness and trouble sleeping. There are no known dangerous side effects of rhodiola rosea.

No matter what herbal remedy you may choose, it is important that you do not mix herbal remedies and that you do not mix these herbs with any prescription medications. You should always do sufficient research before taking any herbal medications and start with the smallest doses recommended.
