1. Stay Away from Unfair Fighting

You are going to have disagreements in any relationship. As long as they are healthy disagreements and you fight fair, these bumps along the road can actually be beneficial to a relationship. Usually in these situations it allows both parties to open up a bit more and get to the core of why they are fighting.

Though these types of disagreements can be good, they can be bad if you are doing it unfairly. Remember to not become defensive and do not bring up past mistakes. You want to focus on the issue at hand in the present time. It is also important, if you are going to criticize, criticize the actions of your spouse, not your spouse themselves. There is a difference and it can be the difference between staying married and getting divorced.

2. Forgive and Forget

In order to really move ahead together in your relationship, it is extremely important that you forgive, and most importantly, forget past arguments and actions. Though there are certainly indiscretions that shouldn’t be forgotten, nor forgiven, most things that happen can and should be forgiven and forgotten over time if you are sincerely interested in staying in your marriage.

3. Have Realistic Expectations

Making sure you are realistic about what to expect out of your marriage is also extremely important. For instance, if your partner has always been a slob, and you knew this going into the relationship, you can’t expect them to suddenly turn into a neat freak and magically begin picking up after themselves. Something like this is part of their personality and will almost never be completely changed. You may be better off with a compromise in a situation like this, or even asking for a small effort to be neater.

4. Keep Promises

If trust is an issue in your relationship, one way to ease your partner back into trusting you or you into trusting your partner is to make promises to each other. You must, of course, follow through on them. Breaking promises, no matter how small, is going to be counter-productive in any plan you have to fix your relationship.

5. Start Dating Each Other Again

One of the most successful methods for saving your relationship is to start dating each other again. Going back to basics and remembering how you felt when you first started dating and fell in love with each other is the place you want to be. Remember how happy and excited you were for the future. Rather it is a nice dinner and movie outing or a quick walk in the park, taking time for each other can make a significant difference in your marriage.
